Hi Char,

We use inexpensive white plastic plant tags with metal wires.  They are about 
1/2 in. X 3 in.  You can use weatherproof pencil or fine tip marker on them.  
If the cross is successful, we then put that tag right in the pot of seeds 
when planting them.  If the cross doesn't take, you can use Comet to rub off and 
reuse.
