I don't know what the pathogen is, but it causes the iris rhizome to become mushy, and it does the same thing to the hen-and-chicks. With the hen-and-chicks it apparently spreads either through the soil or through the roots attacking the roots first. It starts at one end of the planting and works its way across over the summer.
