Re: HYB: adaptability/microhabitat

Linda and others--

Since NIGHT GAME has been mentioned, as well as ROMANTIC EVENING, how about
moving on to the already mentioned WILD WINGS, whose ancestry is from a sib to
Night Game x Romantic Evening. With the sib of the pod parent mentioned as
one of the survivors, and the pollen parent as well, here is one that might
well have the genetic constitution we seek.

As to the performance of WILD WINGS here, I'd call it a survivor. I've not
given it any particularly special care and have shared its rhizomes with
others and still have some blooming sized plants in the ground.

My crosses with Wild Wings were sent to middle TN for growth in a climate a
bit cooler than yours, warmer than mine.

In addition to WILD WINGS a couple of others that have given me consistent and
good growth both in the south-facing and the north slope area with few frost
losses, no rot and decent foliage without special care are Merle Roberts'
WIDDERSHINS and SHOPTALK. I have seedlings coming along from Shoptalk X Maid
of Avalon, the latter from a cross of Silverado x Mother Earth. Another cross
involves Maid of Avalon X Fiery Temper, so the Romantic Evening heritage is
definitely in a position to demonstrate its stuff since I also have seedlings
up to blooming size from RE crossed on to SKYWALKER, and quite a few seedlings
involving POWER WOMAN (from Swingtown x Romantic Evening) and one of its sibs
with various things, mostly Keppel varieties.

As time, harsh years and varying levels of care proceed I expect both time and
circumstances will week out the week and reveal the strong.

Why is it that there were never chronic complaints about the growth habits of
irises bred in Indiana and on the Lake Michigan shore north of Chicago? Could
it be that Cook, Hall, Fay and those near them were faced with climates no
kinder than ours?
