Re: HYB: extracting pigment

I posted the following earlier today, but it appears to have gone astray.
Forgive me if I duplicate the post.

Regarding the color of Lycopene and how "red" is found and produced in our
irises, the recent article by Dr. Spoon in the BAIS is definitive. The color
photos are well produced due to the tall skills of both Bruce Filardi and
Terry Aitken.

Spoon says, as do I, that it takes a slight amount of anthocyanin to cool the
hot, somewhat orange-red tone of pure Lycopene to shift the pigment's color
over to spectrum red. Lycopene is a close approach, and a flower of intense
Lycopene color in the garden would be an astonishing thing--but it wouldn't be
quite "red," just rather close.

I found a re-reading of his article very productive. It is packed with useful
information for breeding toward true red.
