But they probably were.  A good iris will initiate stalks over a  period of 
time.  It's logical that stalks at different points during the  freeze would 
react differently?  This sounds like an article I read several  years ago.  Is 
it from the bulletin?
 
Not sure I remember the pigment intensity part, but my focus would have  been 
on viable pollen and pods.
