It will take some time to dig out the information, but I have notes on
germination versus transplant versus eventual survival rates from
crosses last year.
Here are some undocumented impressions (may turn out to be wrong after I
dig out the data) from one cross.
IC1: (IMMORTALITY x CELEBRATION SONG) is a rampant grower here,
California, Kentucky, and Indiana, but died in Georgia (twice!), has
super healthy foliage. Occasionally a newly set rhizome won't thrive.
CELEBRATION SONG occasionally rots here, has bad foliar diseases (leaf
spot), but generally does extremely well. IMMORTALITY has super healthy
foliage, but occasionally a newly set rhizome will rot.
ABOUT TOWN is barely able to replace itself here (may have rotted or
failed to increase this year), has bad foliar diseases, but has bloomed
and had fertile pollen.
IC1 X ABOUT TOWN produced a <lot> of seeds with very high germination
rate last winter/spring, some after the first indoor burrito chilling,
more after the subsequent outdoor chilling. Many seedlings died both
before transplanting and after. Few of those survivors died once lined
out in the garden. All (nearly all?) of the seedlings from the first
indoor burrito chilling have moderate to pretty bad foliar disease
susceptibility. The seedlings from the second round of chilling look
cleaner. Nearly all seedlings from the burritoing look big enough to
bloom this spring, some of the later batch also look big enough to
bloom.
Based on the amount of foliar disease susceptibility, I expect higher
losses this coming year in the first batch than in the second.
