Re: HYB: testing seedling toughness

Unfortunately those first seedlings have to come from parents that
aren't my seedlings <g>.

You forget, I'm barely started on this stuff and have few fairly good
seedlings to cross to. There are a few from other people that I've
"adopted" and regard as being equivalent to my supertough seedlings
(i.e., IMMORTALITY, HARVEST OF MEMORIES). This is the first germination
season with any crosses <between> my seedlings (I think that's true).
Also the first year with most crosses having a seedling as one parent.

One thing for sure, my own seedlings produce a <lot> more seeds and
seedlings than any store boughts I've tried.

<Cross TO your seedlings when possible! This is advice I received
years ago.

Part of that reasoning may be that your seedlings are better
acclimated to your particular conditions? Just looking for
contributing factors. Betty W. >
