I have a small collection so watering is not a problem. I water and fertilize as needed.
In the last 4 years records of seed count my average has been 25 to 35 a pod on TB's.
I remember of a pod with 78 and have had many with only 8 to 15 seeds. One thing I have found is some years are better than others. Some of the largest counts have come from two pods on one stalk, different pollen parents ( about 50 seeds each)
Small wimpy stalks seem to produce smaller seed counts. Good strong stalks can have better seed count. This is not always true.
So many variables to deal with. Pollen dabbing time here is always humid and often raining. I made over 250 crosses last year resulting in about 40 pods. I have just about given up on planning crosses and just cross what is blooming. I wouldn't know what to do with 250 pods anyway.
I believe weather conditions at the time of the cross has more to do with it. Compatibly of the parents could be another. I get more seeds with crosses using my own iris on the average.

Anyone have theories or observations on pod production? The care and feeding of iris pods?
