I have seen other post that they have had success with broken off stalks. I have had only one that I got seeds that germinated and it was almost mature, still had white seeds. Most of the ones I saved rotted on me.

Don't raccoons wash their food before they eat it. I would think squirrels could think it was a nut. I have found a few cut off with teeth marks on them. Of course I blame squirrels for everything. I cover my seed pots with wire to keep the squirrels out. Since they can not get to them maybe they go to the bathroom on them so they won't germinate.
