Average seeds per <cross> (not per pod) that produced surviving
seedlings for the three year period was 43, maximum=159, minimum 5.
If I'm making a cross I really really want, and I have a lot of pollen
and blooms to work with, I may attempt as many as a dozen blooms (two or
three stalks). With stingy ol IMMORTALITY, I usually only attempt two,
especially since I don't know what is going to make the best combination
with her (healthwise). With something I'm mostly just playing around
with (and of course, <those> seem to be the most fertile!), I may only
make one or I may make several attempts.
This was the first year to get more than two pods on anything - several
with three, one with four. Not all of those are included in the numbers
I posted yesterday ( ....or was that this morning? It's been a long
day...). If you really want to know, I can dig out the information.
Easier to tell you how many seeds per pod there were if I average them
all for each year, rather than just the ones that have (so far) produced
surviving children. Didn't plant everything this year or the year
before, planted some of the bigger lots of seeds outdoors rather than
burrito'd, so they are a year or more behind the burrito'd ones.
I ran thru my notes pretty fast yesterday, so no guarantees the data I'm
sharing is everything, but it's close.
<What is your average seed count per cross? Are you setting multiple
pods? Betty>
