PHOTOS: question - IPTC headers?

I guess this question is mostly for Bob Pries.
Some folks where I used to work were asking about photo datasets, and I got a cc:d message that mentions using IPTC headers with photos for things like copyright info etc.
Bob, is this something you are using with the photos you are accumulating, & if so, how does it work? I looked at a little about it online, & it sounds pretty arcane.
