Friends who operate a retail greenhouse complex have been using kitty
litter, clay based and unscented, as a water retention addition to their seedling
and plants pots The litter will hold three times it's weight in water and is
much cheaper the water crystals. When I transplant flowers, a tablespoon of
litter goes into each hole before the transplant is placed into ground. Most of
the time the litter is added to a mixture of fertilizers and other
supplements.
