An award for an iris that does well in many climate (read AIS regions) would not mean that it is a dull iris. There are tons of gorgeous iris that do well in a a wide number of climates.

For awards consider, a rule that each regions vote is counted a weighted score. So that first place for a region gets 10 points, second 7, third 5 and then 4,3,2, 1 for next positions,

Then total for all regions. Voila, a plant that is best re flower and plant for a wide number of regions wins award. Not a flash in the pan that grows well in a limited region, by very many people.

For lower awards, you would use a higher point count, and more plants get voted on. Can select best certain number for , as AM award.

Changing the award system to promote the most durable PLANTS would
certainly slow down the evolution of all the fancy new colors and
patterns and forms that come from Oz, CA and OR (i.e., iris heaven). Is
that really what anybody wants?

I don't believe this is true. Those exciting new colors and magnificent
blooms are what sell. Hybridizers will not stop breeding them just because the awards system shifts in the direction of durability. The person buying irises from a catalog or web site can already see for themselves if a new variety has a spectacular color or pattern. If the AIS awards are to add any value above and beyond what the shopper can already see in the catalog pictures, that added value has to be a recognition of superior plant and
stalk qualities.

IMO.
