Re: First Iris Bloom of the 1997 Season!!!!

Hi Carolyn!

You have asked me to elaborate (I don't know how to copy part of the message
in my response either, I'm wainting for somebody to answer to Brad so I can
learn!)
my coment abaout GENE MACHINE (GM) withstanding the rain and wind a lot
better than some of my old irises.
I'm sorry I did not make myself clear.
Yes, it does refer to substance.
One bud in each plant, GM and a peach-yellow old but beautiful iris, bloomed
at the same time. They were buds one evening and flowers open to the rain the
next morning when at about 10AM I surveyed the beds with my 16x25 binoculars
. They had taken the rain for two days before that 'blooming' morning. When
it stopped for a few minutes, at about 12AM, I run out and cut both flowers,
among others.
The petals of my no-name oldy were transparent in parts, broken, wilted. On
the other hand, the dropplets of water on GM seemed to be adorning the
flower, which was in perfect shape, velvety, smoth and brilliant. When the
dropplets dried out one flower was ready for the compost pile while the other
lasted 2 and 1/2 days, and without water marks.
By the way, I don't have the list. Could somebody tell me who introduced
GENE MACHINE (I was told it was in 93)? It has really beautifull form, color
and ruffles. It was my first bloom (planted in late August). I love it!
Cheers,

Elena Laborde in Santa Cruz, delighted because I could work in the garden the
whole day today, under the SUN!!!
