SILVERBAND is the JI introduced by Ensata Gardens in 1989. Dark
red-violet, silver white and cream variegated foliage. It was im-
ported from Japan by Arthur Hazzard. Synonym = I. ensata varigeta.
(Variegated sport of I. ensata spontanea). It received an HM in
1992.
So, whoever made the comment about the variegated irises still
being considered species was on the right track...
Question for the hybridizers - if one crosses a variegated iris
with a 'regular' foliage flower, what is produced?
Just a comment - I have grown the variegated I. pallida for several
years and it is very hardy in Zone 3 and the foliage is lovely in the
mixed border where I have them. It was my first bearded iris given
to me by a friend and it is very prolific.
