Graham & Sharon,
I have not, and do not, have the time to trace parentages for purple
base. And this may not be possible. However I can say that hardiness
cannot be equated to having a purple base and vice versa. The varieties
Lemon Custard and Solano, which I have mentioned here before, both have
purple base and I doubt they could survive the first winter in cold
climates. They may have hardy ancestry way back in their breeding, but
the tender genes took over.
