Carol,
Re: vermiculite
In an article in the AIS Bulletin for October 1995, Raising Species Iris From
Seed, Elaine Hulbert, who Clarence tells me knows more about species than
most anybody hereabouts, touches on the vermiculate process, but does not
give particulars. "I haven' t dealt with what is for some experienced growere
a favorite system of germinating seeds, the refrigerated packet of moistened
vermiculite."
This is a really nice article, beautifully written.
My experience with irises and other perennials needing stratification, or, as
I have recently been told is the proper term,"vernalization" Is that what you
need is a container which is not entirely airtight, and something to hold a
little moisture, vermiculate for example, or sterile potting soil. I use
those little plastic boxes the mushrooms come in placed in a baggie which is
just folded over, not sealed.
