Mathew in the The Iris identifies Iris gueldenstadtiana as a synonym for I.
spuria subspecies halophila. I mention this because of a curious comment W.
R. Dykes made in an article he wrote. He identified I. gueldenstadtina,
which he described as "ubiquitous", as a species that regularly put up flower
stalks in autumn in his garden. Dykes described the flowers as small "of the
usual dingy yellow or pale purple."
This is the only time reference if have found in iris literature of any
Spurae species be a dependable rebloomer. One year a form of I. carthaliniae
(Mathews identifies this as I. spuria subspecies carthaliniae) put up two
stalks in late September in my garden, but has not done it again. I have also
read of forms of various spuria irises putting up a fall bloom stalk...but
always as a one-time affair.
Does anyone on the list know of any clone of a spuria species, or any named
spuria cultivar which reblooms regularly in any section of the country or
elsewhere? Clarence Mahan in VA
