I would like to take the occasion of HAL's birthday (literally--not the
anniversary of his birth) to invite everyone to the subject meeting.
Its title is "2001 Rhizomes--a Space-age Odyssey." It will feature
space-age iris, including a couple dozen seedlings from George Sutton,
several more from John Wight, and many introduced cultivars. It will
include a visit to Descanso Gardens, where the world-class rose garden
may be in full bloom (the last two years it was at iris peak bloom).
There will be judges' trainings by Jeanne Plank and Sara Holk, and
the main speaker will be Brad Kasperek, trying to convince us that
variegated iris (blooms, not foliage) are a color break, not a novelty)
The dates are April 25-27, and the headquarters will be in Burbank, CA.

PS In case the first sentence does not make sense, in the book 2001,
this is the date when the HAL 9000 computer became operational.
The space-age theme was originally chosen because this year is the
20th anniversary of Star Wars (and is also the 30th anniversary of
the Star Trek series).
