Hi
Carolyn Schaffner asked if the soil in my pots of arilbreds is frozen.
The soil is definitely frozen, and the foliage is about 4-6 inches high and
pliant. Rhizomes are firm. The pots are in the garage, next to the basement
window. I thought heat leakage from the basement would moderate the
temperature extremes. During the amazing warm-up and rains of December, the
pots went outside for a couple days, since this seemed to be the weather
Sharon was experiencing.
I guess the real reason I planted the arilbreds in pots was not to avoid
extra cold temperatures, but to make it easy to regulate soil mix and
moisture. Even before I learned about botrytis, it seemed that mud season
here, when the top 3-6 inches of soil liquifies, was what was killing my TBs.
Since I didn't have the time to build high, sandy raised beds, a large pot
with a very sandy soil mix seemed a good home. We'll see!
