Re: Upcoming Birthday of Iris-L on IRC

There were several requests for information about IRC. Basically, IRC
(internet relay chat) is a system that sets up a real-time "conference
call" between different computer users. You need IRC software and an
internet service provider that allows you to connect to an IRC host (most
do). Once you connect (and find the right "channel") you can exchange typed
messages with others in (almost) real time. For more information (including
where to go for IRC software for both PCs and Macs), see the IRC FAQ at

http://www.irchelp.org/

There are some commands to learn and some learning curve involved, so if
you've never used IRC before you might want to practice some before using
it for serious matters, such as the Iris-L birthday party on Feb. 2.

7pm Mountain Time is 9 Eastern, 8 Central, 6 Pacific. Overseas members are
invited to make their own time zone conversions.

The "Undernet" is one particular network of IRC servers. I have no special
partiality to it, except that it seemed to be working pretty well when I
first tried IRC. To connect, set your IRC host to us.undernet.org or
uk.undernet.org.

Watch this space for more info as the big day approaches. I'm thinking the
easiest channel name to use would be #iris-l, with no caps.

Cheers, Tom.
