We manage to fund our hobby and pay ourselves a meagre wage - better than
most. However, we had sufficient money to buy our site and equipment to set
up the business, and do not expect to get that investment back until we sell
the land for housing development (whenever that may be - 10 years, 20?)
There are many who do not even manage that!
On the subject of plant prices, prices in real terms (i.e. after being
adjusted for inflation) are MUCH lower than they were, say, 30 years ago. At
least this is true here - is it true in the US and elsewhere also?
