AIS Judges - Do Jugdes' Training, don't just criticize

Dear "FATAL" ATTRACTION detractors,

I've watched with alarm, dismay and building disappointment for a week now as
the discussion of the bloom out of FEATURE ATTRACTION progressed. A simple
factual discussion about bloom out would be helpful to everyone, but I was
alarmed becasue this was a vigorous attack on a specific iris because it won
the Walters Cup.

I was dismayed because the the whole discussion freely discredited AIS
judges, the AIS awards system and by implication, commercial iris growers.
Without these three, there isn't an AIS. These negative discussions do
more harm than good.

I'm an RVP, AIS Judge, hybridizer who gives Judges Training, and I have a
commercial garden. I was disappointed because these negative discussions
make it harder for an RVP to recruit new members; I'm offended for all the
judges who in "good faith" voted for this iris; and as a hybridizer I'm
saddened because it's hard to look forward to winning an award when it'll
bring out the "wolves".

The majority of AIS jugdes are excellent, dedicated people trying to do the
right thing. However, like everyone else they can be better. Instead of
criticizing them, volunteer to give judges training. But always remember,
judging is subjective and even the instructor can be wrong.

LEAVE THE AWARDS SYSTEM ALONE except where it is positively broken! Every
time the awards system is changed all AIS judges have to be RETRAINED to the
new rules. Also, whether you like it or not, the breeding or hybridizing
plans of the hybridizers are affected by the awards system. Excessive
medling with the awards system will have detrimental affects on future iris
produced. It can take 10 years to produce iris to match the award
catagories.

I'm sure you're sick of my lecturing, Brad Kasperek ZEBRAIRIS@aol.com
