One of the things that interests me about this species is its variability,
recently discussed in SIGNA. Mathew informs us that the species, surely with
many variations, enjoys a European range from Scotland and Ireland to as far
south as Morocco, Algiers, and the Canaries, with populations in Corsica and
the Azores. There are, therefore, some pretty varied growing conditions and
one presumes some adaptation has been happening. That the seeds must be
adapted to attract birds seems obvious to me. One plant I know locally grows
in acid clay in what amounts to nearly full sun and while it looks a bit
beat-up at midsummer it blooms, sets copious seed, and has had decent
increase.
