Re: Butterfly Wings

Bill Shear asks about BUTTERFLY WINGS

:This was supposed to have been a cross of Iris susiana x tetraploid tall
:bearded. As I grew it some 25-30 years ago, it looked like a typical TB
:with rather small blooms, blue standards and buff falls with a widely
:spaced veining of maroon. Aside from the unusual pattern, there was no
:sign of aril blood; it grew and bloomed well with TB varieties.

I grew it about 15 years ago...the same plant you describe. Although errors
are possible, I didn't question its aril ancestry. The pattern is similar
to that of OYEZ and some other oldies from aril x TB breeding, predating
the modern CGWhite-type arilbreds. Someone else may have better
information, however.

:I seem
:also to recall that it was the parent of an award-winner called (?) Blue
:Butterfly.

It produced a number of descendants...I think STRIPED BUTTERFLY was
another. If I remember right, most or all of the offspring were from
breeding with other TBs, so many of them have very little aril content,
although they do preserve the veined pattern in the falls.
:
:Is it still available, and if so, where?
:
Good question. I'd like to grow it again if you find a source.
