In my experience, in order to be popular it has to be a good plant,
regardless of age. A historically "important" iris will not sell well unless
it grows well and blooms well in most seasons.
Good growth + good blooms = good sales
- a simple equation, but it holds true for all irises of all ages (bearded or
otherwise).
Of course, defining "good blooms" is not so easy! (-;
