Agreeing with Walter--Christy's page, like her baskets, quill work and
paintings, is a work of art. However--I still have some questions about
the siberian-japanese hybrids. I found it very curious that each
individual pictured had flowers that either looked pure Japanese or pure
siberian--but maybe that's just from the photographs. Such a result would
be very unusual, as would the extensive fertility exhibited by these
plants....let's wait and see before we get too excited.
I would hope that Christy could arrange for a chromosome count on some of
these plants. Since ensata has 24 chromosomes and siberica 28, true
hybrids should have 26. Their gametes would then have 13, so fertility
with either parent should be extremely limited, since in each case there
would be unpaired chromosomes....any thoughts on this from more experienced
hybridizers than myself?
