Be careful what you wish for. This spring we had a disasterous snow storm.
Very heavy, wet snow that took down a lot of power lines, blew up a
transformer substation about 5 miles from here, and decimated the pine tree
population. I've never seen nearly that much damage from an ice storm. A
lot of people, me included, didn't really know how bad the mess was until
this fall. We were too busy cleaning up in the spring, and the foliage
covered it up in the summer. After the leaves started to fall, all of these
downed tree snags became very obvious. Fortunately for us, it was fairly
warm so the house stayed above freezing until the power came back on. I
hope the people who have lost power from this ice storm have the same luck.

It is looking and feeling a lot more like April than January. The rains
continue here. Some of the roses have starting putting leaf buds out. They
are in for a surprise. The iris are hidden under a nice pine needle mulch.
So far they don't seem to be trying anything particularly strange, except
for Clarence. He's trying to bloom.

Looks like another really lousy year for cross-country skiing.
