Mark, Walter, and Leslie: your understanding of the list policies is the
same as mine. They say explicitly that postings about non-iris gardening
topics are acceptable, provided the off-topic label is used.
However, as strictly unofficial advice, it's always wise to consider
whether using the list for a non-iris discussion might be self-indulgent.
Take a look at the volume of off-topic mail, the reactions of fellow
listers, the number of people participating in the off-topic thread, and
then follow your own judgment about whether the topic should be moved off
list.
In most cases, though, I don't see much of problem. This is what the OT tag
was for, and anyone who reads the welcome message will know to expect a
certain level of such conversation.
