Greetings,
I want to make some brief remarks about the subjects above.
First, it should be clearly understood that I positively dote on Crayons and
have never been without a box in my adult life. Even as we speak the first
limited edition collector's set with all the retired colors is on my shelf, a
Christmas gift from the newest kitten some Christmases past. I believe firmly
that everyone should have a large set of Crayons, and find interesting ways to
use them often.
Now, about this idea of using them as a color reference for communicating
about irises: I'm not sanguine about their bigtime utility in this regard. The
reason is this: the RHS color fans included about eight hundred colors, the
Ridgeway system, contained over a thousand, as does Pantone, and Crayolas
contain fewer than a hundred. It will be difficult, I think, to find very
close or significant matches for a lot of things.
About the RHS Fans. The last I heard the were out of print, that is
unavailable for purchase from the Royal Horticultural Society. But things
change and I have sent a e-mail note to the RHS asking for information. I
assume I will hear back from them in the fullness of time and, if so, I will
post the information I receive.
I am also making some inquiries to the folks at Pantone and Color-aid about
correspondences with other systems and also about reasonably priced products
and I will be back to you on these subjects if any information eventuates that
sounds useful.
In the meantime, if you ocasionally need to communicate the color of an iris
or a daylily to a friend I suggest that you take a bloom to a large paint
store and select a sample chip which matches and mail that along to them.
Don't just send the name since they change them periodically as a marketing
ploy.
