I can still recall my very first session of JT, Roanoke Convention,
1974. All of the points that Walter has mentioned were covered by the
instructor, a well-known hybridizer, A.I.S. Board member, exhibitor.
I don't feel that any of these points are unethical (again with the
exception of #9). There were other points made during that session and
the one that has always stayed with me is this: "If you are going to
cheat - cheat neat. " What was being referred to was using super glue or
even sewing needles to hold broken standards or falls in place.
When I lived back in New Jersey one of the members had a house that was
heated by electricity and each room had its own thermostat. He could and
did cut his show stalks the night before and open them in a room where
the temperature was "jacked up." The next morning he would load them
into his van with the garage doors closed away from all winds, etc. It
was not unusual at all for Ray to win the Silver Medal for the most blue
ribbons. Unethical? Not at all. He was just making full use of the
facilities he had at hand.
