I would like to thank everyone who responded to the survey on
the ethics of several selected show techniques I called show biz. We can
all breathe a sigh of relief, knowing we are trying to present the iris in
its best light and are not cheating.
The only one that raised an eyebrow or two concerned the use of a
wedge for a tow-in bud or flower, clearly explained by Rick Tasco. I
would like to add that in the case of a 1997 introduction, it would take a
few seasons to know if towing was typical for the variety. And, further,
towing sometimes is weather related and not a fault of the cultivar.
Finally, I would say that several shows in Ft. Worth back in the
70's and 80's would have been canceled if those among our society had not
used their spare refrigerators. I can remember two horrible windstorms
that shredded bloom or blew down stalks on Thursday and Friday before the
show on Saturday. There was a terrible hailstorm on a Friday afternoon as
well. Those exhibitors who had watched the weather forecasts and planned
ahead by cutting and refrigerating had perfect stalks to display.
Thanks again.
