Trying to make sense of codes
from the 30s & 40s based on a
knowledge of cultivars from the
80s and 90s is like trudging UP
the "Down" escalator.
It's easier if you go back to basics
and look at how the old patterns
translated into codes. Next
"homework" assignment: =
I. amoena
I. neglecta
I. plicata
I. squalens
I. variegata
Although some are no longer accorded
species status, all were standards in
use when the original codes were =
devised. Find the accepted code for each
of these and you'll have a good example
of what that code originally meant.
