HYB: 201 Homework

Assuming all who wish to participate
have now finished the chart for =

SOSTENIQUE, here's the next step.

TRIBE OF JUDAH is an arilbred, an
OGB+. Its pedigree suggests that
it is most likely a triploid and it does =

breed like one, showing limited rather
than complete fertility as would be =

expected if gametic doubling had been
involved. =

For those of you who do not have
Checklists, here's its description:

Standards are violet, with copper
flush at the base.

Falls are copper with large, near-black
signal.

Style arms are golden yellow.

Now, as promised, here's its estimated
chart. This has been deduced strictly on the
basis of the flower's appearance. Because
it is an AAB-type triploid, we're working with
trios instead of quartets.

V V??
We don't know whether it comes from
the TB or aril side of the family.

I ???
The TB inhibitor doesn't affect the aril
pathways, so we don't know whether
it's there.

PL ???

Y Y??
Mostly likely from TB ancestors.

A a??

H ???

T ???

S S??

The last is a new one, for SIGNAL.
The signal pattern is another very
complex trait, but this will do for our
exercise.

LOTS more question marks for an
arilbred, because of the interactions
between TB & aril genes, but still
enough information to make some
predictions.

1. Your Basic Assignment:

Predict the colors you would expect to
find among SOSTENIQUE x TRIBE =

OF JUDAH offspring for

Standards
Style arms
Falls

And explain WHY you chose each one.
[This is a thought problem -- it's the =

process that counts!]

2. Your Bonus Assignment:

Speculate as to some other colors
that you MIGHT find, based on the
numerous question marks in the
charts. Explain WHY you came up
with each one. =

3. Special for Linda Mann:

Suggest ways to "cheat" on these
assignments. < wry G>

Or call it identifying other resources....
There are clues in the archives and
in articles I've published.....

This is a real-life project. When you
finished this exercise, you should have
a good feel for my reasoning, hopes, =

and expectations when I made that
cross -- as well as the unknowns to
be endured while awaiting maiden =

bloom.

But you won't have to wait years for the
answers like I did. I will post brief
descriptions of some of the seedlings,
to confirm your predictions and provide
clues that will eliminate some of those
question marks.

Have fun! =
