Clones are the result of asexual reproduction of a "parent" individual.
Since individual irises are multiplied by separating the increases from the
"mother" rhizome, this represents a low-tech method of cloning. Thus all
the BEVERLY SILLS irises growing in gardens around the world, for example,
are clones from the original plant bred by Ben Hager over 20 years ago. No
test tubes, labs or men in white coats required! (-:

I. variegata is a naturally occurring diploid bearded iris species native
to Central Europe (Hungary and surrounding countries). It was named for the
appearance of the flower (yellow standards, "red" falls) and not for the
leaves, which are solid blue-green. Variegated leaves can occur in some
clones of almoet any iris species or type (though I am unaware of any I.
variegata clones with leaf variegation. The most widely grown variegated
leaf forms belong to the diploid species I. pallida, one of which is
formally known as PALLIDA VARIEGATA. Then there are the modern tetraploid
irises with variegated or broken color flowers. It is not surprising that
it can all get quite confusing at times.
