Unfortunately it is a hollow shell of previous catalogs, and is primarily to
show new intros, but not even all of them have color photos. Abe Feuerstein
cites the pressures of his law practice keeping him out of the iris office.
James P. McWhirter, who died in 1996, was apparently the moving force at
Stockton.
It's a pity. I have ordered from them since the beginning of my involvement with
iris, and most of my best selling varieties were ones I picked out from their
catalog. This was one case where ordering from the prettiest pictures really
paid.
The 1997 catalog was the first hint of a problem in catalog production - the
photos were uniformly too dark - just lack of color run production oversight it
appeared to me, but I didn't order because nothing looked good.
I did order in 1998, including Abe's new intro Helen Rusk, which has done very
well. For this one $50 new intro plus the regular order he included about $200
of free new intros, which really re-enthused me about Stockton! Then last year
nothing and this year the shell catalog.
I do hope he can find a new partner to take over this phase of the operation.
I'm sure the hybridizing is going on and the iris beds are intact. There's
something to be said for family operations that can span the generations like
Suttons and Schreiners. It's very difficult to establish a business partnership
that lasts even one generation.
