    I can't say you won't leave a opening for rot but my experience with
Cranberry Ice has convinced me that there is times when nicking will help.
I had C I for about four or five years and all I was getting was a fan and
no increase or bud stalk each year. I had moved it twice. Last Fall I said
what the heck and nicked the rhyzome in several places.  This Bloom season I
had 2 bloomstalks and 9 increases at bloomtime. In this cae nicking
benefitted.       Bill
