I don't understand why you put them in the fridge or freezer in a 5b
zone.
Doesn't it get cold enough for regular planting?
Sure it does but germinating my seeds in the fridge gives me total
contol over germination and a head start to get the seedlings big enough
and ready for our terribly icey winters. I also have an extreme lack of
space where I live now so only the germinated seeds get put out into the
garden and finally , EVERYTHING heaves out of the ground with our rain
snow , rain snow climate . I simply think my chances are better with
fridge germination , plus there are no squirels in my fridge :-)
