If it never freezes, bearded iris will attemp to continue to grow all
the time. Otherwise, they'll begin to curtail growth with the cooling of
winter. Iris actually do well with a cold winter season, and begin their
new growth as soon as they're not subject to freezing all the time.
Water, or lack thereof, also affects their growth. So when one slacks off
water during the heat of summer, which is towards the end of a rhizome's
growth cycle, the older outside fans begin to brown and die. Yet new buds
which are forming next years rhizomes may still be growing.
Some of the newer reblooming bearded iris actually go through a double
season in one year. For me, rebloomers try so hard to push growth of a
second rhizome in one year, that they usually send up their rebloom stalks
in November.. in time to get frozen.
