In the neck of the woods I live in, the presence of alcohol at a club function
such as a potluck would certainly be a no-no. I have seen alcohol
offered only at convention or regional meeting sites via a cash bar.
I do remember a picnic once where a guy with a six-pack in his
pick-up sneaked away for a little sip or two, but such is extremely
rare, indeed - as rare as the juxtaposition of beer and irises.
Patrick, you saw the cash bars at the Dallas convention before the
two banquets. That is about the extent of what I have seen. I have
heard some goings-on through thin motel/hotel walls where I have
suspected alcohol was present.
If you are hosting this potluck at your residence, then you can
offer what you like. The members can take it or leave it.
But, if it is being held elsewhere, I would get permission from
whomever. Liability??? Do you fear excesses and the possibility of
a designated driver?
Good question. I do not remember anybody asking this before.
Alcohol at a club function would not bother me, but you really need
to consider all members of your club.
