Hello to all -- WOW, this is wonderful.... all the responses and great
info I'm getting re: possibly trimming my iris beds -- so far, from what
I'm reading, I'm leaning towards doing a little clean-up, but no real
trimming back until the fall. Sounds like I need to do a bit more
watering, also......
As to the historical background of my plants.....yes, I believe ALL of
these iris were purchased from the Maryott family when they still had
their operations here in the "Willow Glen" area of San Jose -- which is
where we live. The former owners were "Patnude" and the woman with the
green thumb was "Bessie Patnude". Apparently, she allowed herself a
small budget, each year, to feed her hobby -- she walked the Maryott
Gardens each year during open house, made her selections, and then later
planted them into her collection here at the house.
I'm not sure where "Corralitos" is..... but I thought the Maryott
operations moved to "Freedom, CA" which is basically down by Santa Cruz
-- about 30 miles SW of here on the coast.
Another reason for preserving my little piece of heaven? Neighbors
walking by tonight (with their 4-yr-old preceding them on her bicycle
w/training wheels) stopped long enough to say how glad they were that
we'd left the iris bed when we overhauled the yard! Turns out, the woman
walked the neighborhood every evening with her husband, while pregnant,
and when their little girl was born April 27th -- they named her "Iris"
and took her first outdoor photo amongst the iris here on the corner! and
have taken a birthday photo every year since!
Yikes! Pressure's on !!! to guard the glorious garden :)
