HIST: HIPS Sale Rhizomes

Hello, Everyone!

This is the season when the iris orders roll in, and yesterday it was a
carton from Larry Harder containing rhizomes from the HIPS Sale. In spite
of Larry's apologetic note about not being able to fill all orders, I
received four of the five cultivars I had ordered, plus three extra
rhizomes, only one of which represented a cultivar I am already growing.

The logistics of the HIPS Sale are quite challenging, as the sale list is
based on pledged donations that are not always forthcoming when it is time
to ship the rhizomes. Hats off to Larry and the HIPS force for doing as
well as they do! I would shudder to even think about conducting our local
club sale on the basis of a pre-printed list of the cultivars that would be
available when the sale was held.
