critter ?

Well, I guess now I have a critter. I have lived in this house for 20 years
and today I went out to see how my newly planted iris's were doing and there
was all kinds of fresh dirt around them. I first though to myself "where was
my husband the other day when I needed the dirt!" . Thinking how nice,
that he got around to helping me (Even if it was a little late). I moved the
dirt around and did remove some. I went into the house and Thanked him for
the new dirt and he look at me like I had just lost what was left of my
mind. His comment was "Honey, you better go look again I think maybe you
have critters". I was sure he was wrong, but now I don't think so.... I
think what ever it is it wants my new iris's and I am not willing to give
them up. Help! ? I know its not the two big loud dogs that just moved in
next door, I haven't made friends with them yet, (It's on my list). They are
fenced in But, I never had a problem before. What do we have here in
California ? Not the "G" word !
Thank you for any help I can get.
