Hi Rosalie:
      I kept my iris mulched with wood shavings and grass clippings thus 
preventing the splashing of dirt/water on the leaves. Without the mulch, the 
weeds absolutely TOOK OVER my beds, flower and vegetable (and 20,000 sq. ft. 
is just too damn much to hand weed!) I pretty much kept the rhizomes 
uncovered . . . .This was the NW corner of Arkansas . . humid, and lots of 
rain. I didn't notice any degree of rot or any other problems one might 
associate with mulching. . .
      I agree with you about Cleome! Yes it does tend to take over but such a 
pretty take over!! and it affords some dappled shade, holds the soil and 
attracts beneficial insects. It also helps keep (some) weeds from getting too 
frisky! And it pulls up easily!
