I don't know. JIs do not, as a rule, increase rapidly up here due to
our short growing season. After all my posts about mixed borders, I
must say that I _do_ give JIs special care that I do not afford my
other perennials simply because they seem to need it here. On this
property I have lost some JIs every year which I didn't do at our last
house 30 miles east of here. Still trying to get a handle on the
reason....this soil is just a little more alkaline but not enough to
make (I don't think) a huge difference but I may be mistaken. We are
still on the acid side of neutral. They are mulched and watered, etc.
The short answer is in my first three words. :) I used to plant
daylilies and JIs in close continguous beds since they have the same
bloom period here in this Zone 3 and I like a lot of color at once
rather than patches here and there.
