Dave,

There may be "sun tolerant" hostas in areas where you have sky shade (lots
of cloudiness) as well as ground shade (trees, fences, building, etc.), but
in this part of the West, where "the skies are not cloudy all day", as the
old song goes, hostas that get the least bit out of the shade burn to a
crisp. From Paul Tyerman's comment, it sounds as if it may be the same in
Oz.
