Hmmmm.... a can of worms here.
Microsoft is already beginning implementation of software
that you subscribe to (i.e. must be online to use). Which is fine
if you want the expense of DSL, ADSL, cable modem service, etc.
Or if you want to have an additional phone line installed.
You are in trouble if your ISP is down, if a virus hits, if a phone line is
cut,
if you decide you want to not have the expense of internet service, or any
such scenario. I do 80% of my computer work offline, sometimes just to
avoid the temptation to surf or get interrupted.
That is my primary concern to things that are limited to online availabilty
only.
Not to mention that I might haul a laptop out to my garden to reference
things.
In this case the cd-rom would be my preferred choice. And I would always
have
a backup hardcopy (the BOOK) in case I needed a quick reference and didn't
want to boot my computer. I hope computers never replace the good old book.
