Linda, I use alfalfa horse pellets as compost about 150 pounds to 1000 square feet and plow it in deeply before planting.  I also use other compost.  I would put very little of it in pots.  Walter's experience with it in pots makes sense to me.  In the field, I believe it promotes health and growth.  It could certainly sour in pots.

  all merrily dosing our gardens with and what kinds of
  pesticides/herbicides are used in its production?  If it comes from
  different places & has different management needs, then content of some
  trace elements (both from soil differences and irrigation water) and
  pesticide residues might vary in the raw alfalfa/lucerne & maybe in the
  extruded pellets as well.
