I may not be right but I just make sure the rhizome is free of 
borers, trim the leaves back (they end up in an inverted vee about 3 
or 4 inches long) and replant.
Mine have survived the experience quite well.
north of Kingston in Eastern Ontario where the grass is beyond 
crunchy and there is no rain in the forcast.
