I think iris need some cold - else why would south FL be a place that 
you can't grow them.  The same as lilacs, apples, strawberries and 
tulips I think.

Except CA, FL and Louisiana, I've never lived in a place where there 
weren't freezes and thaws - most of the middle of the US is like that 
(These places include PA, VA, MD, and RI).  When we lived in RI, I 
mulched my iris with pine needles, and they did fine.  (Even though 
people told me not to.) I've heard of people who put rocks on them.  
You just have to decide whether you want to lose the iris from 
heaving or from rot (semi-joke).  At least if you mulch it cuts down 
on the weeds.
